How to Get Involved

Get Involved

Thank you for your interest in participating in I Love A Clean San Diego’s Adopt-A-Beach program.

Please follow these steps to adopt:

Step 1: Choose your adopted site by visiting the adoptable areas page and register online to create your Adopt-A-Beach account – this will track your cleanups and accomplishments through the program.

Step 2: Once you have registered, schedule your cleanup dates using the calendar tool that appears when you login.

Step 3: Recruit your volunteers – you can download flyers here. Let ILACSD know if your group has increased or decreased two weeks before your cleanup date, as this helps us know other actions necessary.

Step 4: Go online or use a map to find directions to your cleanup site. You may also want to scout out the best place for your group to park.

Step 5: Schedule to pick up your supplies at ILACSD’s office before your cleanup. ILACSD provides bags, gloves, data cards, and pencils at no charge, and offers our Zero Waste option that includes trash grabbers and buckets for a $5 per item deposit in cash or check only. Deposits are refundable as long as grabbers and buckets are returned in working condition in a timely manner.

Step 6: Print waiver forms for your volunteer group. ALL volunteer participating will need a wavier form and any under the age of 18, need a parent/guardian signature. Waivers can be found on the Forms page. Let ILACSD know if you have any questions!

Day of the Cleanup

At your cleanup:

  • Review safety information and instructions with your volunteers, distribute supplies, and hand out data cards.
  • Tally your data cards, note your volunteer turnout, and weight of trash and recycling collected on your summary card.
  • Place full bags into on-site trash cans so the bags are dispersed evenly and do not overflow, or place them in the on-site dumpster. Inland canyon sites must leave bags in an unobstructive pile and report location to ILACSD so the ranger can pick them up.
  • After your cleanup, login to your AAB account to report your totals from your summary card.
  • If you have borrowed trash grabbers or our Zero Waste items, these must be returned within one week of your cleanup to receive the full deposit back. If you have extra supplies, either return them or store them for your next cleanup.
  • Please mail in or drop off your waivers from your cleanup to our office one week after your cleanup.

Safety Procedures

Prior to the event, make sure that all participants:

  • Receive and sign the waiver of liability. If under 18, the waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes, a hat, and sunscreen to cleanup. If cleaning an inland area, we recommend that volunteers wear long pants.

On the day of your cleanup, please be sure to review these safety/cleanup rules with volunteers:

  • Children should be supervised by adults at all times.
  • Do not pick up any needles, syringes, broken glass, or other hazardous items. Mark items and alert a lifeguard or ranger as to their location.
  • Do not touch dead or injured animals.
  • Please do not disturb or remove items from homeless encampments, regardless of their level of activity.
  • Do not turn your back on the street or other hazards.
  • If cleaning near the ocean, be very careful during periods of high surf or a rising tide.
  • Make sure fire pits are cold before touching.
